When it comes to fragrance, there are two primary options: essential oils and synthetic fragrances. Let's explore the differences between essential oils and synthetic fragrances, their production methods, advantages and disadvantages, cost considerations, and the notable wellbeing benefits they offer.

  • Steam Distillation: This is the most common method used for extracting essential oils from flowers, leaves, stems, and other plant parts. The process involves placing the plant material in a distillation apparatus and passing steam through it. The steam causes the release of the volatile aromatic compounds, which then condense and are collected as essential oil.
  • Cold-Pressing: This method is mainly used for extracting essential oils from citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, and grapefruits. The fruit peel is mechanically pressed to release the essential oil contained in the oil sacs. Cold-pressing does not involve heat, which helps retain the natural aroma and characteristics of the oil.
  • Solvent Extraction: In this method, a solvent, such as hexane, is used to extract essential oils from delicate flowers, such as jasmine or rose. The plant material is immersed in the solvent, which dissolves the essential oil. The solvent is then evaporated, leaving behind the concentrated essential oil.
  • CO2 Extraction: This method utilises carbon dioxide (CO2) as the solvent to extract essential oils from plant material. Under high pressure and low temperature, CO2 becomes a supercritical fluid that acts as a solvent, effectively extracting the essential oil. CO2 extraction is known for producing high-quality oils and preserving the delicate aromatic compounds.

The Cost of Essential Oils

Some of the most expensive essential oils in the world are prised for their rarity, labor-intensive production methods, and the sheer amount of plant material required to extract a small quantity of oil. Here are a few examples of highly valuable essential oils:

  • Rose Essential Oil: Rose oil is one of the most expensive essential oils due to the extensive amount of rose petals needed to produce a small amount of oil. It takes approximately 60,000 roses to distill just one ounce of pure rose oil. The delicate petals are handpicked early in the morning when their fragrance is at its peak, making it a labor-intensive process. The scarcity and time-intensive production contribute to its high cost.
  • Oud Essential Oil: Oud, also known as agarwood, is a highly prised and rare essential oil derived from the resinous heartwood of Aquilaria trees. These trees are infected by a specific mold, triggering a reaction that produces the aromatic resin. The resin is then steam distilled or extracted through hydro-distillation to obtain the precious oud oil. Due to the limited availability of Aquilaria trees and the lengthy maturation process required for resin formation, oud oil commands a high price in the market.
  • Sandalwood Essential Oil: Sandalwood oil is obtained from the heartwood of sandalwood trees, primarily found in India and Australia. The oil has been used for centuries in various cultural and religious practices. However, over-harvesting and limited availability of mature sandalwood trees have led to a decrease in supply, driving up the price of sandalwood essential oil. Sustainable sourcing and cultivation efforts are being implemented to protect the species and ensure the availability of this precious oil.
  • Neroli Essential Oil: Neroli oil is extracted from the blossoms of the bitter orange tree. It takes a large number of blossoms to produce a small amount of oil, making it a costly essential oil. Additionally, the flowers are delicate and must be harvested by hand to preserve their quality. The labor-intensive process, along with the limited blooming period of bitter orange trees, contributes to the higher price of neroli oil.
  • Jasmine Essential Oil: Jasmine oil is derived from the delicate flowers of the jasmine plant. The flowers are handpicked during the early hours of the morning when their fragrance is most potent. It takes a significant quantity of jasmine blossoms to produce a small amount of oil, which contributes to its high cost. The labor-intensive process, short blooming season, and the delicate nature of jasmine flowers make this oil a valuable and expensive commodity.
